Finisterre is the sixth studio album by English alternative dance band Saint Etienne, released on 30 September 2002 by Mantra Records. Following two relatively uniform albums, Good Humor and Sound of Water, Finisterre contains a wide mixture of sounds and styles (as would its successor Tales from Turnpike House)

London has been used frequently both as a filming location and as a film setting. These have ranged from historical recreations of the Victorian London of Charles Dickens and Sherlock Holmes, to the romantic comedies of Bridget Jones's Diary and Notting Hill, by way of crime films, spy thrillers, science fiction and the "swinging London" films of the 1960s. This approach has since been emulated by the Saint Etienne films Finisterre (2002) and What Have You Done Today, Mervyn Day? (2005). The latter attempted to capture the state of the Lower Lea Valley prior to its transformation ahead of the 2012 London Olympics. Other films have tried to use less familiar locations in a new way.
From a beautifully conceived film-poem and an imaginative exploration of the Lower Lea Valley to an uplifting documentary on a London landmark, the collaborations between much-loved electronic indie trio Saint Etienne and filmmaker Paul Kelly (Lawrence of Belgravia) document London ever-changing environment and landscapes to music by the band. Finisterre, a homage to the gritty real London, all to the sounds of Saint Etienne's album of the same name. They said, they were asked to do a promo film for the album, but instead sound-tracked a great film. Absolutely wonderful films about London by the combined mega-talents of St Etienne and Paul Kelly.

In that sense, Finisterre is a return, forsaking the unified approaches taken on both Good Humor and Sound of Water. But the album resembles what many longtime fans would call a blatant return - a return in lieu of new ideas (to borrow). The group's bright and shimmery dance-pop instincts are practically oozing out of one-third of these songs, though none of them quite scale the heights of the group's best material
Saint Etienne's have their own sense of place. Last June, Swedish dance-pop duo Air France released "GBG Belongs to Us", a three-part multimedia tribute to their hometown of Gothenburg. The Swedes explained their intentions in words lovingly similar to the ones they'd used to describe Saint Etienne in a Pitchfork interview a few months earlier: "For us, geography and architecture are essential elements of po. That goes for Pete Wiggs, Bob Stanley, and Sarah Cracknell
Saint Etienne have always believed in having an aesthetic. On their 1991 debut, Foxbase Alpha, the trio finessed 1960s pop, 1990s dance and an encyclopaedia's worth of cultural references into a celebratory vision of Englishness three years before Britpop. Though that vision later became blurred, their sixth album, titled after a recently renamed outpost of the shipping forecast, revisits Foxbase Alpha's terrain, a decade older, wiser and angrier . Finisterre is the work of a band who have remembered what they're here for. Topics.
