Jalbert, a 33-year-old music teacher at Rice University in Houston, was given a standing ovation from a packed house at the Barbican arts center in London when his name was announced Wednesday. This was the second Masterprize competition. It was founded by John McLaren, an investment specialist, for short works for symphony orchestra to bring composers and music lovers closer and to find new works with the potential to enter the standard orchestral repertoire. For more information, visit the official Masterprize Web site.
When John McLaren had the idea for the Masterprize composing competition a decade ago, it seemed harmless enough. The music, all played far more expertly than it deserved by the London Symphony Orchestra under Daniel Harding (are they really that short of work?) was profoundly depressing. The only compliment that can be paid to it is that if all six pieces were terrible, at least each was terrible in its own way.
Daniel Harding, in charge of the London Symphony Orchestra, whirled his arms as though conjuring spells. In the audience, youth orchestra players from Masterprize’s education project cheered. But as with previous competitions, for some of us the party collapsed once the six shortlisted pieces, survivors from 1,000 entries, started. Masterprize, established by the novelist John McLaren to get audiences and composers embracing each other, enjoys good intentions and a terrific letterhead (Mariss Jansons is now its artistic director).

Tommy is a 1972 album, based on the original 1969 album by The Who, featuring the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Measham, of arrangements by Wil Malone. The project was conceived by Lou Reizner, initially with Rod Stewart singing Roger Daltrey's main role. As Pete Townshend and Daltrey became more involved, Stewart's role was reduced to singing "Pinball Wizard".
A World Class Orchestra The LSO needs no introduction – London's oldest orchestra and one of the most famous and most recorded in the world, the LSO is renowned for its consistently high quality performance both in the concert hall and recording studio. The LSO's speed at sight reading is second to none, saving clients lots of time. And to quote Alexandre Desplat, 'The LSO doesn’t just play the notes perfectly the first time, they play the music
