Even before his death in 1997, Fela Anikulapo Kuti was the stuff of legend as the creator of Afro-beat, and as a fierce political activist, outlaw, and outspoken voice for the oppressed not only in his native Nigeria, but throughout Africa. Though harassed, beaten, tortured, and imprisoned by his own country's oppressive military dictatorship, he could not be broken. Like Bob Marley's, Kuti's name has been synonymous with liberation. Since his passing he has even become the subject of a Broadway musical that bears his name and tours internationally. He is a bona fide folk hero.

The army’s sacking of Kalakuta in 1977 was not brought about wholly by Zombie, but the album took the tension then existing between Kuti and the military regime to breaking point. On the title track, over an urgent, quick-march accompaniment from Afrika 70, Kuti ridiculed the men in uniform as mindless thugs, each of his lines punctuated by the female backing chorus’s taunt, Zombie! For the army, the lyrics were the final provocation, a direct attack on its pride and prestige, and probably more wounding for being made, in part, by women

Fela Anikulapo Kuti (15 October 1938 – 2 August 1997), also professionally known as Fela Kuti and simply Fela, was a Nigerian t, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist, and political maverick. He has been called "superstar, singer, musician, Panafricanist, polygamist, mystic, legend. Some elements often present in Fela's music are the call-and-response within the chorus and figurative but simple lyrics. Fela's songs were also very long, at least 10–15 minutes in length, and many reached 20 or even 30 minutes, while some unreleased tracks would last up to 45 minutes when performed live. This was one of many reasons that his music never reached a substantial degree of popularity outside Africa. His LP records frequently had one 30-minute track per side.
